Columba Hotel - Oban

We stayed in a variety of places on our two-week trip throughout Scotland. Two were 5-star hotels, three were B&B's and one was the Columba. The Columba had the absolute best showerhead we experienced. Only the Columba and one of the 5-star hotels provided two pieces of soap (one for the sink and one for the shower). Unfortunately, the Columba had the worst beds. On our twin beds, one of the mattresses was coming apart, and both were lumpy. The mattresses had no pads, just a loosely-wrapped sheet on top. There was no topsheet either, so the duvets were directly on the sleeper's skin. (We wonder how often the duvet covers get washed!) All in all, however, the rooms were nicely designed, well-thought-out and large enough to accommodate our extreme overpacking (especially in comparison to the B&B's). For the money -- the rooms were a real bargain thanks to hotels.com -- we would still say the hotel was a good choice. (Just fix the mattress problem, Columba!)

Staff friendly; room modern and well appointed but very dark even with all of the lights on. room very clean except for the window which was so dirty I could hardly see out. Food good.

Having read all the reviews on here previously all in all it sounded a nice hotel. Like those before have said reception area and front of hotel dont look the best. We were lucky to get a car parking space. We had a double bedroom, room was very clean, not very big, bathroom was quite big and okay apart from the shower which didnt do much more than dribble water on us, didnt look out to the sea (which I think most people who had given excellent reviews prob did do). The funniest part of our room was the 1970s tv, maybe wasnt quite 1970s but was pretty old, made us laugh after reading reviews of large plasmas in room. Lift was old but worked fine all the same. First receptionist who greeted us on our arrival was very helpful and nice. We didnt ask for an alarm call but we were awoken by the fire alarm around 7.15 am which was alarming but stopped after a few seconds. "Happy" receptionist on our departure didnt mention or apologise for alarm but she couldnt raise a smile either. Prob wouldnt go back unless we got a very good deal and a sea view :-)

The receptionist was less than welcoming - other staff members made up for her frostiness. Our room was clean, well proportioned and comfortable. A few bits of maintainance were required - a hole in the wall and some stair rods (internal stair to bathroom) were missing. A generous and beautifully cooked breakfast buffet was supplied but the tea came in fits and starts and one of our party never got her pot at all ........ shambolic! We will return - it is ideally placed and the views from the windows cannot be beaten.

The hotel is in an excellent central location, however their own parking is limited to about 6 or so places so we ended up having to park on the pay and display adjacent to it. We were lucky enough to get a sea-view room and could watch the fishing boats and ferries coming in and out of the harbour. The room was clean, not huge but certainly large enough and well stocked with teas/coffees/biscuits etc. We went on a ferry trip to Mull and Duart Castle which was lovely. If you are wanting to go on a Caledonian ferrt trip to one of the islands I would advise going to the ticket office when you first arrive to see what is available, as not all trips take place on every day and we missed the one we really wanted. I would definitely stay at this hotel again if I were to return to Oban.

this hotel is a perfect location for shops ,bars and restaurants .I loved the view outside looking right onto the harbour and a great view of MC CAIGS TOWER .Very friendly atmosphere and good food .I will go back again soon.

This hotel is set in a really good location right on the harbour front. The beds were comfortable and the rooms clean. Breakfast was also very good. The hotel itself is a bit tired looking and definately in need of a make over. The rooms have been painted but the furnishings are old (except the bed). Also, there is no aircon or able to open a window and room can get stuffy and hot at night.

Our room was on the second floor (that's the third floor British lingo). The lift (elevator) is as big as a closet. Much too claustrophobic. We were told by other guests not to use it. Much too old and small. So we had to carry bags up three flights of crooked stairs. Also, parking is a problem since there's not enough room in their own car park, you need to use the municipal parking which is adjacent. But it means you have to "pay and display" a parking ticket from 9 am till 6 pm. Staff were very helpful and friendly.

The Columba is in a perfect position to enjoy Oban and reach both railway station and ferry. Visitors should be sure to request a refurbished room although no doubt they will be all be refurbished in due course. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We ate dinner there on one evening and were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food. The bar is a nice place to end the evening. I would go back there.

very good hotel with reasonable price

I loved the feel of the hotel and the quant town of Oban. The Hotel staff went above and beyond every expectation I could have every had wonderful people on staff at this Hotel. The room was quant and had a perfect veiw of the town and over looked the water as well. I would highly recommend this hotel, location great and people great.Thank you for a wonderful time.

Very pleased with stylish bedroom and en-suite. A bit disappointed there wasn't a decent lounge area. However would come back.

Staff molto gentile in una struttura che avrebbe necessità di restauri, almeno per i servizi. Posizione strategica sul porto, con annesso parcheggio, con le attrazioni della città a portata di passeggiata. Molo dei ferry a pochi passi.

Ett mycket trevligt hotell. I ett gammalt fint hus, beläget på Obans norra pir med en fantastisk utsikt över Kerrera och de Inre Hebriderna. Vänlig och hjälpsam personal. Rent och snyggt, god frukost.

Mycket bra hotell i hjärtat av Oban.Stannade bara en natt men trivdes jättemycket.

Fint läge, lättillgängligt. Vårt rum var rymligt och fräscht. Fin frukost. Mycket prisvärt!

Wir waren im Juni 2009 im Columba Hotel. Positiv ist anzumwerken, dass das Hotel sehr zentral liegt; mitten im Zentrum. Das bringt aber auch Lärm mit sich: auf der einen Seite gehen die Zimmer zur Hauptstraße, auf der anderen Seite zum Hafen. Eine beständige Lärmkulisse ist also garantiert. Ansonsten gab es einen Haupteindruck: das Hotel ist vernachlässigt. Das gilt für die Zimmer, die Flure - und die Angestellten. Der Eindruck wird ein wenig dadruch abgeschwächte, dass die Zimmer wohl gerade renoviert wurden - unser Zimmer roch intensiv nach Farbe. Das Bad hat die Renovierung noch vor sich - es sah aus wie aus den 70ern. Fazit: Ich würde dort nicht noch einmal übernachten.
